The brainchild of three French music lovers, the event series and music-loving collective J.A.W was conceived in Paris back in 2005. Its principle ideology, to represent soul music in all its variations, in a live setting regardless of its roots and so called genres.
Over the years, the J.A.W Family gave a platform to artists who never or barely played in Paris leading to Larry Heard’s debut in France back in ’05, Sadar Bahar’s European debut and Theo Parrish’s first all night long. Artists such as Moodymann, Marcellus Pittman, Jamie 3:26 or Omar S also blessed J.A.W over the years. From 2009 onwards, the J.A.W Family brought their soulful practices to Berlin, hosting both live acts and DJs throughout various urban arenas. Among others, Pharoah Sanders, Leroy Burgess, Seun Kuti, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, Christian Scott, Hiatus Kaiyote, Gogo Penguin, Chris Dave, Makaya McCraven alongside the likes of Floating Points, Theo Parrish, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Waxist, Hunee, Four Tet or Gilles Peterson to name but a few.
What are J.A.W Family up to at this year's festival?
We’re organising a boat party and stage over the festival weekend. J.A.W has a focus on Soul in all its forms, from disco, boogie, funk, house, Brazilian, gospel to hip-hop. Dedicated to vinyl, we’ve invited DJs who appreciate that view on digging. On Friday, our stage J.A.W Presents Maurice Fulton, Red Greg, Alexander Nut, Il Bosco and yours truly. Keeping it real with those who appreciate record collecting and J.A.W’s musical outlook. The stage is all about the soul, real.
On Saturday, we’ll be hosting a boat party with Cosmic Slop, our J.A.W Family, Red Greg, joined by a bunch of Family friends. Loved by Floating Points and Theo Parrish, Cosmic Slop is a non-profit party used to fund MAP, a pioneering charity that supports young adults to achieve qualifications in creative fields. Alongside him, Red Greg, one of our Family members & highly respected selector amongst his peers, regarded as one of the most gifted disco DJs in activity by the likes of Floating Points, MCDE or Rahaan. This party is about the music and the people there.
