A collaboration between Dimensions, Manana and Loopmasters
Dimensions is collaborating with the musical organisation Manana and music production company Loopmasters offering producers the chance to create original music with new and stimulating sounds.
The winner will be flown out to Dimensions 2018 and offered the opportunity to perform the track live at the festival.
Latin Grammy winner Hammadi Valdes and Sarah Tandy, described by The Guardian “One of the brightest prospects on London’s jazz scene”, have created a sample pack based around various Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms. We are asking our worldwide network of producers to rework, re-imagine and get creative with the loops and sounds provided in the specially created sample pack.
There are no constraints on genre and we have included some instructions below to explain things in more detail.
Our panel of expert judges will judge their favourite track and the chosen producer and a friend will be flown to Dimensions this summer. They will also have the opportunity to perform live at the festival.
The project aims to celebrate a range of Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms and to connect producers with musicians to create new music.
The musicians featured are Afro-Cuban percussionist Hammadi Valdes (Ariwo/Chucho Valdés/Irakere) and jazz pianist Sarah Tandy (Sarah Tandy Trio, Camilla George Trio.
Each track is built around different Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms that are played in a triple-pulse. The clave loops provided act as the backbone for the rhythms, defining the groove of the musicians as they play. The recording was a long free-improvisation between Sarah and Hammadi, with additional parts overdubbed to the most promising sections.
Each track contains ready to use loops as well as longer ‘free’ sections of playing that will allow producers to highlight the musical interactions between the two players.
Full details here. The competition closes on Sunday 5th August (midnight).
